GENDER MATTERS Issue #1 / October 2010

What is Gender?
Gender refers to socially and culturally determined ideas and practices about what is to be female or male. Gender determines whar is ecpected, allowed and valued in a woman or a man in a given context. For example, women might be expected to take on caring or domestic duties and remain close to home, while men may be expected to be the main bread winner, working outside the home. Such stereotypical expectations about the kind of work that women or men can or should do result in a gendered division of labor.
